Draft Mission and Vision Statements

RE: Revised Clark County Schools Vision and Mission Statements
CC: Winchester Sun

The school district went through a rigorous and thorough evaluation process last year by two different teams representing the Kentucky Department of Education. That process was designed to identify deficiencies or provide guidance for improvement. One recommendation was to rewrite the “Vision and Mission” statements to better define what and who we are and assist us in focusing on the most essential tasks for our staff, students and patrons of the school district.

The council of councils representing all of the SBDM building committees assisted the superintendent and Mrs. Pat Rosenthal, Assistant Superintendent and the District Assessment Coordinator (DAC) to provide the new versions of both the vision and mission statements. We will continue to work on the draft statements through September and will ask the Board of Education to adopt the revised statements at the regular October 16th meeting.

One important aspect we have come to understand in public education is that in the past our vision and mission statements were too long and had too many conditional phrases such as “hope to achieve” or “adequately prepare”. Those statements were hard to qualify and quantify so recently districts have been challenged to get to the heart of the matter much like business and industry does in their slogans and phrases. For instance who does not remember some popular phrases such as “just do it” or “be all you can be” and which company or entity that represents. In the draft statements below we tried to quickly but accurately reflect what we believe should be our vision and mission statements. We would appreciate your input as well. After reading our draft statements please visit the district’s web site and click on “vision and mission statements” and give us your feedback comments and/or recommendations for improving what twenty-eight volunteers have developed to date. We will meet again on Thursday, September 20th to review the input we got from various segments of our Clark County constituency. Thank you in advance for assisting us in this important first step towards improvement.
