The Cardinal Counselor

The Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is an arts education program of the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts that provides arts training through a free three-week summer residential program. Both the summer program and ArtShops are free with no application fee. This fall they will conduct ArtShops in Lexington, Louisville, Morehead, Owensboro, Pikeville & Paducah. Students can register on-line at www.kentuckygsa.org, or call the GSA Helpline at 502-562-0192. All high school students are welcome to apply.

Gates Millennium Scholars is available to seniors with a GPA of 3.3 or higher, is a minority, qualifies for FAFSA and turn in the three required forms.  See your counselor for more details.  Deadline:  January 12, 2009.

Teh BigSun Organization is offering a $500 scholarship to  a deserving senior who is currently involved in some sport at their school.  Deadline:  June 27, 2009.  Visit their website at http://www.bigsunathletics.com to apply.

The A & F Scholarship is available to juniors, seniors, and anyone currently registered to a post secondary institution between the ages of 16 - 30.  Apply by writing an essay on one of the two following topics: - if you could have lunch with any famous person, either living or dead, whom would you choose and why?  Describe your conversation at lunch,  or when you look back on your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?  Submissions must be sent by email to:  www.scholarships@abbottandfenner.com.

The Toyota Community Scholars is an honor for seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better, be actively involved in the community, and plan to pursue a four-year degree.  One scholar is chosen and sent to Toyota.  Applications are due to the counseling center by November 21, 2008.

McKelvey Entrepreneurs Scholarship is worth up to $40,000.  You must apply online:  www.mckelveyfoundation.org or call 877-625-3583.  Deadline:  January 25, 2009.

University of Kentucky Academic Scholarhips are available for students who will be Freshmen in the fall of 2009.  The following are available:  Flagship and Provost are automatically awarded; Singletary, Presidential, Commonwealth, National Excellence, and William Parker Freshman Scholarship applications available in the counseling center.  Deadline January 15, 2009.Â

The Horatio Alger Association Scholarship is available for students with a minimum GPA of 2.0, have a financial need, must pursue a bachelors degree and have community/co-curricular activities.  Deadline:  October 30, 2008.  Apply online:  www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.
