March12

Today’s class started with our read aloud, “Maniac Magee”.  I read chapters 32-33.  When I finished, the students had to complete a t-chart.  On one side was summary, the other, prediction.

We then moved on to our “I can”  for the day.  It is: I can identify whose point of view the text is written (first hand account or second hand account).  We used the following website for practice:  http://macmillanmh.com/ccssreading/treasures/grade5/ccslh_g5_ri_2_2d.html

We then moved in to literature circle groups.  By tomorrow morning, these are the readings/assignments that should be complete:

“Johnny Tremain”- Chapters 1-2, 2 Journal entries

“Miracle Worker”- Pages 1-50, 2 Journal entries

“Borrowed Children” - Chapters 1-7, 2 Journal entries

Maniac Chapters 32-33 Group B

March12

Usually Grayson was always the first one to do everything, but today Maniac was the first. Maniac went to Gryason and yelled his name. Maniac felt Graysons hand and it was cold. Grayson died and got buried.  Maniac looked at the things that made holes in the ground for people get buried. He said to Grayson, “the big one gave birth to a little one”. All of the Paulbears started smoking, all exept one. Maniac went home and painted angrily over his address of 101. He ran everywhere that went forward and by nightfall he was back in Two Milles. Maniac thought that nobody would ever orphan him again. The next evening came and went and now Maniac is just waiting to die outside in the cold.

February Reward Friday

March1

Friday, February 24th, the 5th grade had a Reward Friday.  You might be wondering what a “Reward Friday” is.  It is a celebration for kids to reward for homework completion, behavior, etc.

February Reward Friday was a celebration for kids who turned in all homework assignments on time.  If you turned in all homework assignments on time, you received 30 minutes free time.  If you missed one assignment, you had 20 minutes.  10 minutes were given to those who missed 2 assignments.  If you missed 3 or more assignments, you didn’t get any free time.  One classroom was used as a study hall for those who were  not allowed to attend.  The other two rooms were  “party rooms”.

During our free time, we were able to do the following:  Play with electronics (ipods, ds, kindles, ipads, iphones, etc), board games (Headbandz), toys, books and/or stuffed animals.

Another awesome thing about Reward Friday is we get snacks and drinks!!!!   This time we had cookies and Hi-C’s.

We have scheduled our March Reward Friday.  It will be March 30th.  The requirements are the same as they were for February.

Pennies for Patients

March1

On Tuesday morning, Mrs. Brown spoke to us about the charity Pennies for Patients.

Pennies for Patients is a charity that gives money for cancer research- especially Leukemia.  The charity also gives money to families to help pay medical expenses, treatments, hotels, and travel expenses.

Central Elementary is trying to raise as much money as possible.  We were given our own personal money box to collect money (even though it’s called Pennies for Patients, you can collect any type of money).  When our personal box is full, we take it to our homeroom box and dump it in.   Mrs. Brown will then collect homeroom boxes and cash them in to see how much money we have raised.  The class that works the hardest and raises the most money will receive a pizza party.

Some good ideas on how to raise money are:  go look in your laundry room!  There’s always change from someone’s pants pocket there.  Walk around your neighborhood with a parent asking neighbors to donate money.  You could even sell things you don’t need anymore.  You could check on the ground at the park.  You could even do jobs for people to raise money!  Now you have a lot of ideas you can use to raise money for cancer patients!

Every penny counts!  You have the opportunity to make a difference!  Donate now!

Frankfort Field Trip

March1

On February 17th, the 5th grade classes of Central Elementary went to Frankfort, KY to tour the old capital.

We divided into groups with one going to the 200 year old state capital and the other going to the history museum.

At the old state capital, there were golden greek busts inside the whole building.  The staircase in the building was made out of limestone.  This was a special staircase in that it had no supports and was held together by a single keystone at weighed 1000 pounds.  On the 2nd floor, there was a room where you could sit in a fancy chair and act like you were the judge.  The old capital building didn’t have any windows on the first floor in the front but had windows in the rooms on the 2nd floor.  On the 2nd floor, there was also materials that were used back then such as ink, quill pens, parchment, and a gavel.  The doors to the building were enormous.  They were big because horses were allowed to come in the building.

In the museum we saw knives and guns that were displayed under glass.   Items in the museum were arranged in chronological order all the way from B.C. to present day.  There were mechanical  and wax people and animals that showed the way they used to live.  Some scenes that were portrayed in the museum were from the Civil War, the KKK, slavery, civil rights movement, coal mining, famous people from Kentucky, and music.

We ended our day by going to a Chinese restaurant and eating the buffet.  After we ate, we were able to play some arcade games that were in the restaurant.  They had a chocolate wonderfall that you could put bananas and marshmallows and strawberries…and anything you wanted under the chocolate.  YUMMY!!  We got to use chopsticks to eat our food with.  Most people didn’t know how to use them.

We all had a great time learning about Kentucky’s history and culture.  We hope you have enjoyed our blog about our Frankfort field trip.  Have a great day!!
